WINGSPAN 2 (Aircraft 1/32 Modelling), CANFORA Publishing

The second volume in this exciting series, authored by Tony Canfora of Canfora Publishing from Sweden, continues to showcase the increasingly popular 1/32 aircraft scale. The landscape format and large photos allow the opportunity to explore the models closely, and to truly appreciate the level of detail achievable in this scale.

Every modeler likes these large picture formats with good stories and modelling practices that inspire him want to go out and make his own kit, just like the one in the book.

Eras of aircraft shown range from the early World War One aircraft, through to World War Two fighters and bombers, then through to the 50s/60s and modern jet age. This book is as diverse in its choices as many people’s tastes.

All in all we have 10 builds, 128 pages in full color, many illustrated modelling techniques and hundreds of photos, most of them close-ups and of excellent quality to show even the tiniest rivet and paint detail.

The 10 builds are (all to 1/32 scale of course):

  • Mitsubishi A6M2b Type 21 Zero (Navy), Tamiya
  • Felixstowe F2b, Wingnut Wings
  • Focke Wulf Ta152H-1, Zoukei-Mura
  • F-4C Phantom II, Tamiya
  • Kawanishi N1K2 Shiden-Kai, Hasegawa
  • Ju87G-1 Stuka, Hasegawa
  • AV-8B Harrier II, Trumpeter
  • Hurricane IIC, Fly Models
  • P-61A Black Widow, Hobby Boss
  • Bf109F-4, Hasegawa

Full-page close-ups and overall views are combined with step-by-step instructions to depict each model to its full potential.

All features have a small side table, with main information: the model kit used, the aftermarkets, and paints brands.

Also every single work has a color label to identify all articles, to a quick search.

Certainly this book can serve as an inspiration and guideline for your own current and future 1/32 scale builds.

We personally do not know all the contributors, but they seem to be very, very experienced modellers and several of their techniques are useful to read and have in mind for reference. It is rather improbable to like 100% all ten builds (personal tastes and styles vary) but you will stop and study some pictures repeatedly to admire a specific way of painting or weathering. Even the less likable -to our taste- builds benefit from the excellent close-up professional photography and inspiring lay-out/page design of Toni Canfora who manages to compose a true scale modelling (and publishing) masterpiece. The background behind and under the models is almost always white, which is the perfect colour to study with ease the painted surfaces and the weathering. The lighting is always perfect and the photographer clearly knows how to shoot very realistic and interesting (especially low) angles, something we do not see all the times in monthly magazines, websites or even books. All this, combined with an impeccable printing, produce a book you will enjoy reading and keep coming back to it, each time discovering something new.

At the price of 27 euros this is a reference not to be missed by big scale fans. We would add that the wealth of interesting modelling techniques included makes this volume very useful to all modellers, regardless of scale. In fact, after studying closely some of the builds one realises the huge potential of 1/32 scale, regarding the amount of detail packed in such models! Almost breathtaking and -for most modellers- impossible to achieve in 1/48 or smaller scales – available showcase/shelf space and cost are perhaps the only two reasons for scepticism. In the meantime, we are eagerly awaiting the third volume in this successful series, sometime in 2017!
